Has your ring lost its sparkle? Or is your ring showing some discolouration? Don’t panic, the chances are your ring simply needs a thorough clean. Understanding how to best care for your jewellery is fundamental in ensuring the longevity of your precious items. Below, APS Jewellery shares top tips on how to best take care of your jewellery.

Signs Your Ring Needs To Be Cleaned

There are three key signs your ring needs a clean. Firstly, your ring might be showing visible build-up from day-to-day wear as a result of products such as make-up, moisturisers, or hand sanitiser. Secondly, your gemstones may appeal dull or not as bright as they once did. This is often the case when a piece of jewellery has been loved and treasured without having a regular clean and polish. Thirdly, your gold may be scratched or slightly discoloured caused by day to day wear and tear.

Cleaning Your Jewellery at Home

Cleaning your jewellery at home is an easy process, you simply need warm soapy water and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Firstly, place your jewellery in a bowl of warm water, adding a drop of household dishwashing liquid or any non-abrasive material. Once the jewellery has soaked for 10 minutes, use your toothbrush and delicately brush the piece. Once you feel satisfied with the results, rinse your items in warm water to discard any leftover soapy residue. It's also important to effectively dry the jewellery before wear, as skin irritation can often occur if worn wet.

APS Tip: It’s best to complete this process using a bowl as opposed to over the sink, this is to minimise the risk of dropping your precious items directly down the sink.

If you don’t feel satisfied with the results, your ring will most likely need to be cleaned by a professional. To ensure your ring remains in top condition we recommend having it cleaned by a professional on a regular basis. It’s also highly beneficial for a professional to check your stone settings to avoid the potential loss of a stone.

APS Cleaning Services

At APS, for all bespoke and APS signature pieces, we offer a complimentary clean. We highly recommend cleaning your rings regularly to ensure the longevity of your special piece. However, if your ring wasn’t purchased in-store or designed with our team, we offer a clean and polish service which a team member can organise and quote here.

Caring For Your Gemstones

When cleaning your jewellery, it's important to be aware of the type of stone you have. Each stone withholds unique physical properties, meaning each stone may require a different cleaning process. For example, gemstones such as emeralds and tanzanites have particular characteristics that require special care and attention by trained professionals when being cleaned or checked. Other organic gem materials such as pearls should also always be handled by trained and trusted professionals due to their delicate nature. If in doubt always consult a professional, APS is more than happy to answer any of your questions.
